About me – Barbel DisterI originally trained as a tile-stove builder in Hamburg, before travelling across Europe working in potteries in Germany, France and the UK. In 1990 I came to Cromarty to work in Alison Dunn’s Cromarty Pottery, and have been here ever since.
The Pottery & Shop
When Alison and Alastair Dunn, who started the pottery in 1966, finally retired in the 1990s and I took the business over, the pottery workshops and shop were in desperate need of major renovation. Charming though the 300 year old buildings were, they were dark, cold and damp – a pretty unpleasant place to work during the colder winter months.
So, in 2006 I bit the bullet, scraped together my finances, and took the plunge the renovation was begun. Roof off, the floor concreted, underfloor heating pipes put in, the walls pointed, lintels replaced, new windows fitted, roof rebuilt, and replacement of the old red pantiles. The pottery is now a much more civilised place to work and visit.
Below are some pictures showing the workshop before and duringrenovation, as well as a few of Alison and Alistair Dunn who ran the pottery from 1966 until 1996.
